Gate of Heaven
The Choir of St. James Cathedral is releasing its first full-length recording in well over a decade and we can’t wait to share our love of choral music with you. The project ‘Gate of Heaven’ includes repertoire from across the centuries, continents and traditions. From renaissance Belgium, 20th Century Finland and war-time Hungary, to 21st Century Canada and the avant-garde, this feast of sacred music traces an entire liturgical year at Toronto’s Anglican Cathedral from Advent to Remembrance.
Director of Music, Robert Busiakiewicz writes, “This recording is so filled with variety, there is something to inspire everyone with a curiosity for music. Working with guest percussionists, tubular bells, violinists, living composers and our talented Cathedral staff has been an immense privilege. Reinvigorating classics of the Anglican repertoire such as Vaughan Williams and Willan kept us in touch with our roots, while looking to the future with at least four premiere recordings on this disc fills me with optimism about the state of our musical inheritance and our stewardship. I hope this disc will fill you with a sense of mystery, joy, lament and perhaps even the spirit to join us next week at the corner of King and Church in Toronto.”
The CD is available for purchase during business hours Monday-Friday (with the exception of the hour between 12 noon and 1:00pm) at the Cathedral Centre reception (65 Church St.) for $15 cash. You can also purchase the CD online. Listen on Spotify or YouTube now.
