Same-Sex Marriages Continue at St. James Cathedral
This past week at General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada, a proposed amendment to the marriage canon to endorse same-sex marriage did not pass. Ratification of the amendment would have required a 2/3 vote in favour by each of the three houses: Laity, Clergy and Bishops. Laity voted 81% in favour and Clergy 73%, but the Bishops vote of 62% defeated the motion.
The House of Bishops has consented to each diocese making its own determination about same-sex marriage as the Church continues to pray and discern.
Bishop Andrew Asbil has officially stated that same-sex marriages will continue to be performed in the Diocese of Toronto in affirming churches. As such, the Cathedral will continue to offer the sacrament of marriage for same-sex couples.
