The Venerable Stephen Vail appointed Rector of St. James Cathedral and Dean of Toronto
The Parish Selection Committee is delighted to announce that Bishop Andrew Asbil has appointed The Venerable Stephen Vail to be our next Rector and Dean of Toronto.
Stephen was born and raised in Nova Scotia and lived there until 2001, when he moved to the Diocese of Toronto. Although his family were not church oriented, he started attending services in his home parish in Grade 10. From that grew an understanding of God’s love for him and a realization that the way he was being called to respond to that love was by being ordained. (So much for his plan to become a dentist!) Stephen holds a B.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of King’s College and a B.A. in Classics from Dalhousie University. He studied Theology at Wycliffe College, Toronto, and was ordained in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island in 1991. Since then, he has served in an urban parish, a three-point rural parish, a suburban parish, and a small-town parish. He has a passion for helping churches grow in their expression of God’s reign of love in the world. Stephen has two children in their teens, who are a source of great joy for him. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, walking, time with his partner and children, documentaries, and CBC Radio One.
Stephen is an honorary Canon of our Cathedral and chair of the Diocesan Postulancy Committee. He also serves as Archdeacon of the episcopal area of Trent-Durham, an appointment which will conclude when he joins us in July. He is delighted to be our new Rector and Dean, and is looking forward to working together with us in ministry.
