Biography of the Artist:
A member of the Group of Seven, A. J. Casson studied art at the Hamilton Technical School in 1913 and with Alfred Howell and Harry Britton at Central Technical School in Toronto from 1915 to 1917. He apprenticed with Group of Seven artist Franklin Carmichael at Rous & Mann in 1919 and followed him to Sampson & Matthews in 1927 where he became Vice-President and Art Director.
Through Carmichael he met the other Group of Seven members at Toronto’s Arts and Letters Club. Casson’s design career was crucial to his art. An accomplished calligrapher, he excelled in streamlined design, loved pattern and developed an exceptional visual memory. His art distills Ontario’s farmland and forests into highly finished, carefully composed designs.
After Franz Johnston left the group in 1924, A. J. Casson joined in 1926 to bring the Group back to Seven.
Casson co-founded the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) in 1926 and promoted Canadian art throughout his commercial life, including arts organizations and starting the WWII war artists program
