Our Cathedral community celebrated Emancipation Sunday
On Sunday. July 28, our Cathedral community observed Emancipation Day in two significant ways. Denise Byard was the guest speaker at the Eucharistic celebration.
Following the service, a bronze plaque, marking “Celebrations of Emancipation Day”, since 1834 in Canada, was unveiled by Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada.
Speakers included Majid Jowhari, MP (Richmond Hill), the Dean, the Vicar, Nadine Williams and Dr. Rosemary Sadlier, (activists and co-proponents of the plaque), and Jewel Cunningham, Vice President, Strategic Policy, Business and Digital Services, Parks Canada. Master of Ceremonies was Dr. Stephen Azzi, a representative of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (Ontario representative).

Service: Denise Byard, a postulant for Ordination is the guest preacher. She addresses the topic, “Emancipation Day and what it means as seen through the eyes of an 8th generation African-Canadian Woman”.
Plaque: Following the service, a commemorative bronze plaque, marking Celebrations of Emancipation Day, to be installed at a later date by Parks Canada and the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, will be unveiled in Snell Hall. Remarks will be made by the Dean & the Vicar, government representatives, and the co-proponents of the designation, Nadine Williams and Dr. Rosemary Sadlier.
A reception will follow the ceremony. All are invited.
