**About the Mass of the Presanctified

Over the years, the Good Friday Liturgy has evolved and will continue to evolve. The pandemic contributed to the most recent changes here at the Cathedral. The length of the Liturgy ranges from one to three hours, and its content may include reflections on the “Seven Last Words”, Mattins, Veneration of the Cross, Evensong, the Mass of the Presanctified. The latter, though an ancient part of the Good Friday Liturgy, has not been a feature at the Cathedral.

The Mass of the Presanctified is traditionally celebrated on Good Friday. There is no consecration on that day. Instead, the Blessed Sacrament that is consecrated on Maundy Thursday (Bread only) and translated to the Altar of Repose for the Vigil, is administered during the Good Friday Liturgy. This will be the form the final part of our liturgy this year.
